On its fifth attempt, SpaceX successfully launched the Falcon 9 rocket on Friday, March 4th, 2016.
This long exposure night launch image (more like post sunset) shows the upgraded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifting the 11,750-pound SES-9 telecommunications satellite to an orbit.
SES-9 is a member of a satellite fleet expanding direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting and mobile communications in Indonesia, the Philippines, South Asia and Northeast Asia. It’s the heaviest payload a Falcon 9 has lifted on its way to an orbit.
Story behind the photo: It took a few months of location scouting to find a dock that would work to execute the idea for this shot. This specific launch was delayed four times, almost over two weeks. An interesting note is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of docks along the intercostal waterway facing the launch direction. That would make it mathematically impossible to create the same shot.
